Virgin Media customers to benefit from 10Mbps minimum broadband speeds

Manoj Solanki, Tuesday February 24, 2009 - 1:15 PM

Virgin Media has announced an upgrade programme to move millions of 2Mb customers up to a 10Mb connection.

The migration of millions of 2Mb customers starts in May 2009.  Virgin Media is currently increasing capacity through its fibre optic network as it upgrades it with technology known as DOCSIS3.0.  This standard allows for much higher download and upload speeds at well over 100 Mbps.

Virgin Media will then be offering 10Mb broadband as its baseline broadband offer, along with 20Mbps and 50Mbps products.  Its 50Mb rollout is also due for completion in summer 2009.

Neil Berkett, chief executive of Virgin Media commented: “The migration of millions of 2Mb customers to 10Mb is only possible because of the power of our next generation network and is just one example of how we are creating exciting propositions for consumers which provide transformational experiences and go way beyond their expectations.”
