BT ups connection speeds to 20Mbps

David Cox, Wednesday August 19, 2009 - 7:49 AM

It’s been a while coming but BT’s customers can now look forward to a boost in connection speeds .

The telecoms giant has announced it is now offering headline speeds of up to 20Mbps plus an increase in upload speed from 448Kbps to 1Mbps.  It is also offering the BT Broadband Accelerator for free to all BT Total Broadband customers.

The Broadband Accelerator or I-Plate reduces the amount of interference on broadband lines by isolating a redundant wire in the socket. This increases the chance of more speed and provides more stability to the lines. It’s easily insertable into home telephone sockets and comes with a self-install guide and a comprehensive 10 step guide to increasing broadband speeds.

For current BT broadband customers who order online it’s free apart from the postage. For those looking to transfer from another ISP the accelerator costs £15. The cheapest subscription costs are £7.78 a month for 3 months.

John Petter, managing director of BT’s Consumer division, said: “The BT Broadband Accelerator can make a big difference to the speed of your broadband. We think it is so important we’ve taken the decision to offer it to our customers for just the cost of the postage.”

However it isn’t good news for everyone. At the moment the new upgrade is only available in certain areas so just 40% of UK homes and businesses (around 10 million people) can access it. This is planned to increase to 55% by March 2010.
